The ocean dances with everyday magic. I’ve long believed in its power to heal not just the body, but the spirit.

I knew, even before starting OSEA, that I wanted to channel the healing power of the sea to restore health and well-being.

OSEA was born from generations of women inspired by the ocean. My family’s relationship with the sea can be traced back over 100 years ago.

In the 1920’s my grandmother Elsa, a chiropractor, sustained a serious injury and was bedridden. Unable to care for her patients for months, one night a message came to her in a dream:

“The ocean will heal you.”

And it worked. She attributed her recovery to the minerals and trace elements present in salt water and seaweed. From her, I learned at a very young age that the ocean is a source of healing and nourishment.

I knew I wanted to create seaweed-based skincare. Seaweed is one of nature’s most nutrient-dense superfoods, rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and nutrients. I became fascinated by its ability to transform the skin.

I set out to find unique species of seaweed to use in our products. My search led me to a breath-taking, remote beach in Patagonia, known as “el fin del mundo.” It’s almost as far south as you can go before you reach the end of the world.

This is where I first discovered Undaria and Gigartina—two incredible species of seaweed with exceptionally high levels of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants. I partnered with a local team in Argentina to harvest them by hand, using eco-responsible methods that honored the surrounding environment.

The waters of Patagonia are at the confluence of the southward-flowing Brazil current and the Antarctic Circumpolar current. These dynamic waters generate one of the most energetic regions of the world’s oceans.

The first time I pulled seaweed directly from these waters, I knew I had found the key ingredient for OSEA. Sorting through the seaweed, you get to see results really fast. My hands felt incredibly soft and smooth, it was instant gratification.

Seaweed absorbs minerals from seawater — including iodine, calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and iron — and delivers them to the skin when applied topically leaving your skin soft, smooth and naturally radiant. These minerals help maintain the integrity of the skin barrier, which keeps moisture in and irritants out.

Formulating with seaweed has been such a joy. We work with a variety of species each selected for its unique skin benefits:

Undaria Seaweed: Rich in amino acids, antioxidants, minerals, nutrients and vitamins, it replenishes the moisture barrier and keeps skin looking healthy. Undaria is rich in polysaccharides (like fucoidan and alginates), which help lock in moisture and prevent water loss to reduce dryness.

Brown Seaweed: Moisturizes and mineralizes for healthier-looking skin. Rich in polysaccharides, antioxidants, macro elements and trace elements. Its benefits include improving skin luminosity, visibly firming, boosting elasticity and reducing the appearance of oily shine. In short, brown seaweed has something to offer for every skin type and concern.

Red Seaweed: Moisturizes and smooths to promote supple, healthier-looking skin. Contains bio-protective oligosaccharides and essential nutrients.

Japanese Miru Seaweed: Replenishes and balances the skin’s natural moisture level for healthy-looking, hydrated skin. Miru seaweed is rich in essential nutrients, including calcium, magnesium and beta-carotene.

Sustainability is a priority for OSEA. We ensure that our suppliers use sustainable harvesting and manufacturing procedures, including:

  • Harvesting the base of the stipe to allow the algae to hold fast, regenerate and grow again.
  • Harvesting during reproductive seasons in respect for the ecosystem and species renewal.
  • Harvesting in clean ecosystems.
  • Being conscious of and limiting the use of energy and water to reduce waste during harvesting.

Seaweed isn’t just an ingredient. It’s the source of life.

It’s important for the world to fall in love with seaweed because we will only protect what we love.
